When we're stressed, our minds often narrow and we may see few options for ourselves. This is what neo-cognitive psychologists call a "low state of mind". This can be a scary place, because when we're feeling our very worst and need to be able to see that we have other options, we can't. We think things are bad and will never get any better. Recognize these low states of mind for what they are. Label your thinking as a low state of mind and don't trust how negative it may be in this place. When you're inside a garbage can, everything appears black. It really isn't. There's a whole world outside of the garbage can but we just can't see it from a low state of mind.
The truth is that there are almost limitless options for each of us. The path to exploring those options can even prove fun, even if beginning on those paths may be terrifying. We begin to see these other paths when we're in a "high state of mind". You may not be able to force yourself from a low state of mind to a high state of mind. So don't try. Just know when you're in a low state of mind that there is another place, another vantage point if you will, from which to view your life. When you fail to get get absorbed into and believe all of your thoughts when you're in a low state of mind, you can begin to focus more on the present moment and practice mindfulness. Just attend to what is right in front of you. Eventually your mood will begin to shift. When it does, and you begin to feel more centered and relaxed, you can then begin to explore and look at other options. You will only see those other options once you're in a higher state of mind.
Stuck in a low state of mind? Can't seem to get to a place where you begin to see that you really do have options? Call us. We can help with that. It's sometimes difficult to get out of our own way. Gaining the perspective and help of an outside person can help.
