Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse is just as common in farming communities as anywhere else. In fact, the isolation of many farms can exacerbate the problem. Help is available.

Remember domestic violence is never your fault. There is no excuse for violence, ever. No matter how much you love your partner, your safety may be at risk. Domestic violence is not likely to end on its own and usually intensifies over time. Take appropriate action while you can. Call for help.

If you find yourself abusing someone

There are reasons for your behavior. Your behavior may be destroying the life of your loved one, yourself and your children. The violence is slowly destroying who you are, and keeping you from ever feeling the serenity and happiness you most want. Call us and we can provide you the confidential help and support you need to make positive changes. You will be respected in the process and your life will be better afterwards.

Help that person recognize the abuse. Validate his or her experience. Acknowledge the injustice – no one deserves to be abused. Encourage that person to call a domestic violence prevention program for information and assistance. Recognize and support that individual's strength.

Either call us or call a domestic violence prevention organization yourself for support and information about how you can help the person you care about. Be accepting of your friend's decision about staying or leaving the situation. Remain a friend to the person you care about, taking into account any safety concerns that may be involved. Continue to encourage your friend to call a confidential domestic violence hotline.
